It’s becoming increasingly rare to find a game that allows you and a mate or two to play side by side on the couch. Although split-screen multiplayer might be a thing of the past, you can still find a game that includes it here or there.
There are already a ton of great co-op games on Xbox, many of which offer satisfying storylines that you can play with a friend. Games in the Lego series have always been praised for including an exciting split-screen co-op mode. Many of you probably have fond childhood memories of battling each other with lightsabers in the cantina. So it’s not surprising that TT Games included split-screen multiplayer in their major work, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
Being able to play this truly massive game with a friend is a real joy. With 380 characters for you and a friend to choose from and a range of explorable planets, there’s plenty to see and do here. It goes without saying that Minecraft should be a staple game for any split-screen fanatic. The sheer amount of content at your disposal is absolutely amazing and honestly it’s even more fun with a friend. Building a mud house just doesn’t feel like it without a buddy by your side making a wooden door for you.
You can get up to all sorts of mischief in Minecraft, from building the wildest creations in the overwhelmingly spacious Creative Mode, to frantically chasing down a Creeper in the incredibly intense Survival Mode. But no matter how you approach Minecraft, as long as you do it with a friend, you’ll have the time of your life.
6 A way out
“Made for Coop” experiences are often perceived as strange. They have to be played with a friend, so if you and your best pal just broke up, then out of luck. Luckily, developers Hazelight Studios took a chance with their prison escape game A Way Out, and it paid off.
A Way Out is an incredibly innovative game that ensures both players feel useful at all times. Regardless of what character you play as, your role in the story and in the on-the-minute gameplay is incredibly important. There are also loads of fun mini-games to take part in, and you can even form a band with your friend. Although we wouldn’t advise taking too long to come up with a name. The police are never too far behind.
5 It takes two
Speaking of Hazelight Studios, It Takes Two is another purely co-op game that’s perfect for playing with a friend. This is the developer’s follow-up title to A Way Out and greatly expands on its core ideas. As a result, it easily became one of the best games of 2021, winning a number of awards.
With a gripping story to explore and a number of unique mechanics per character – meaning plenty of replay value – there’s plenty to experience in It Takes Two. Of course, there’s also a plethora of mini-games to enjoy in typical Hazelight Studios. If you enjoyed A Way Out or are simply looking for a lengthy narrative adventure to play with a friend, then check out It Takes Two. You will not regret it.
4 divinity original sin 2
For those looking for an extremely long and deep RPG, Divinity Original Sin 2 is for you. This stunningly detailed game allows for unprecedented customization and offers an intriguing narrative to immerse yourself in. With intense turn-based combat, cities, dungeons and forests to explore, and a whole host of villains to defeat, Divinity Original Sin 2 offers one of the most immersive RPG experiences of all time. And amazingly, everything can be played with a friend.
This is perhaps the most impressive aspect of this game. Like its predecessor, Divinity Original Sin 2 can be played entirely with a friend sharing the same screen. It’s a bold effort that really pays off. There just aren’t many games like this that offer an opportunity to experience it all with a friend. So if you are looking for a massive RPG then you should definitely check out Divinity Original Sin 2.
Of course, one can’t talk about massive open-world RPGs without mentioning indie gem Outward. This incredibly ambitious indie game probably went under many players’ radars, although it was a truly rewarding experience. Not only does it completely redefine what we know as an RPG, but it also allows you to experience the whole thing – and its DLCs – with a friend.
The difficulty of Outward’s combat coupled with its harsh and unforgiving world makes trekking through it with a friend a much greater adventure. There is something immensely satisfying about the companionship between two suffering souls. But fear not, Outward isn’t unfair, and eventually you’ll collect a bunch of very cool gear. But until then, enjoy embarking on a breathtaking, albeit treacherous, journey with a friend by your side.
Cuphead is a unique masterpiece. Its beautiful art style, smooth, exciting gameplay, and charismatic cast of bosses make it a wonderfully memorable experience. And of course, Cuphead is tons of fun alone, but as the old saying goes, everything’s better with a friend.
It goes without saying that Cuphead is a lot of fun with a friend. Not only does it make the slightly tricky gameplay that little bit easier, but it also provides that wonderful thrill and excitement that you experience when you share something special with a buddy. Smashing through bosses really has never felt better.

You’ll probably have a hard time finding someone who owns an Xbox Series X/S and doesn’t own Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
