Manga fans who enjoy One-Punch Man and don’t mind trading superheroes for a fantasy setting should check out That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.
In One punch man, the protagonist Saitama is so strong that this whole superhero manga series is built on the assumption that no matter how powerful his enemies are, he cannot lose. There is an Isekai manga based on the same premise of having an overpowered protagonist but in a fantasy setting: This time I was reincarnated as a slime. However, having an invincible character could leave readers bored, so both manga focus on supporting characters to keep the story moving, and this formula has proven incredibly successful.
This time I was reincarnated as a slimealso known as TenSura, is one of the most successful Isekai franchises, having spawned a manga series, three anime seasons and a mobile game from the original light novels. The manga was the first to be adapted from a light novel and reached a circulation of 20 million copies, and its popularity continues to grow. TenSura tells the story of Satoru Mikami, a Japanese company employee who is stabbed to death on the streets of Tokyo. As he dies, Satoru hears a mysterious voice asking him seemingly random questions. When he wakes up, he has been reincarnated as a slime in a fantasy world, where he later takes the name Rimuru Tempest. His feelings at the moment of death affect the species he is reincarnated as and the abilities he acquires, most notably the ability called “Predator” which allows him to devour anything and mimic his appearance and abilities. He also later gains the Great Sage ability, essentially an AI that performs calculations and aids him in battle.
This is a similar premise to other works in the increasingly popular Isekai genre, but Rimuru’s distinctive feature is that he starts “the game” with far superior abilities than he should. He wakes up in a cave full of monsters and magical nutrients, and his Predator ability lets him devour and absorb all of them, gaining power. When Rimuru finally emerges from the cave, he is so strong that he has very few challenges in the world, even less after successfully evolving into a Demon Lord. Because Rimuru is so powerful, the series often focuses on the large cast of characters he encounters throughout his adventure. Rimuru’s strength and natural charisma (and the knowledge he carries from the “real” world) attracts many other “monsters” who are also able to evolve and grow stronger thanks to Rimuru’s influence. When the nation of Tempest, founded by Rimuru to let all monsters live in peace and harmony, is threatened, most battles are fought by the slime’s closest minions.
This is very similar to what is happening in One punch man. The success of this manga lies in the fact that it completely turns shonen clichés on its head by having a protagonist who doesn’t have to constantly grow with challenges: he is simply stronger than everyone else. Because of this, most of the manga focuses on the other members of the hero association who have to face dangerous fights. When the situation gets too bad, Saitama shows up and solves things, usually unnoticed. One punch man is able to strike a good balance between its ridiculous but effective premise while giving readers their dose of classic Shonen emotion. TenSura also achieves something very similar, as Rimuru remains the main attraction of the series, but its supporting cast have been well developed, being the focus of most of the storyline.
