A report on the sales discrepancies between One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen and all other manga shows that the industry still has to find a solution to a big problem.
The apparent difference in sales of currently released manga in Weekly Shonen Leap suggests there is a big problem for the Japanese comic book industry, which is still dominated by a few big names like One piece and Jujutsu Kaisenwhile everyone else struggles to even come close.
The manga scene was once dominated by the so-called “Big Three”: One piece, Narutoand bleaching. These three alone were largely responsible for the worldwide popularization of contemporary Japanese culture and for the unprecedented expansion of an industry in the early 2000s that encompassed not only manga but also anime, merchandising, films and more. All three works are among the best-selling manga of all time, with One piece comes first Naruto sixth and bleaching eleventh. Despite this, the sales volume of manga magazines and manga books in Japan has steadily declined in recent decades.
An evaluation of sales for manga volumes currently published in Weekly Shonen Leap for the first week of April shared by Twitter users Jump Oricon – who tracks the spread of the Shueisha series – reveals what could be the biggest problem. The report states that Volume 102 of One piece sold 1,050,333 copies and volume 19 of Jujutsu Kaisen sold 1,160,230, two impressive numbers. However, all other series lag so far behind that it seems as if they are in a completely different league. Black clover Volume 32 performed best with just 105,158 copies. This is a manga that has been around for seven years, so the low sales figures cannot be attributed to a lack of knowledge on the part of the manga readers. This case could be made for PPPPPP and Doron Dororon, in the second and first volumes respectively, but their sales (13,970 and 4,936) still look incredibly low compared to the industry’s juggernauts. While these aren’t official numbers, Jump Oricon generally enjoys the trust of the manga community, and the implied performance gap is huge.

It is well known that the publishing industry in Japan is struggling. In 2021, sales will be from Weekly Shonen Leap fell to its lowest level since the 1970s (1,422,766 copies distributed per week), although it is still the country’s most popular manga magazine. For reference 1995 Weekly Shonen Leap an average of 6.53 million copies distributed per week. One reason for the declining sales figures in recent years could be that the magazine’s most recent hits (Demon Hunter and chainsaw manalthough the latter is on hiatus) came to an end in 2020 and there has not been a similarly successful replacement.
The seemingly big difference between the duo of One piece and Jujutsu Kaisen and everything else gives honor to the idea Weekly Shonen Leap – and the manga industry in general – is struggling to find a winning formula that can be applied equally to any product. Another argument in support of this theory is that in 2021, while manga magazine sales were declining, the overall manga market continued to grow, largely thanks to the popularity of Demon Hunterwhich continued to sell millions of volumes over a year after the manga ended Weekly Shonen Leap.
One pieceThe popularity of is a thing of its own, as the series is not only the best-selling manga of all time, but also one of the best-selling works of literature in history. But with One piece Heading toward its demise in the next few years, it seems the weight will be bearable Weekly Shonen Leap Sales will soon fall on the shoulders of Gege Akutami’s dark fantasy manga, Jujutsu Kaisen. None of the manga will run forever, and when they stop there is no clear heir to take their place. The proposed big difference in sales between One piece and Jujutsu Kaisen and all the other manga proves that the industry needs to find a way to sell new stories to the fans as new blood is badly needed before the older series are over.
