Spy x family CH 62.2: Plot Summary
Spy x family CH 62.2 begins us with young Loid staring at the column of smoke coming from the direction of his friend’s clubhouse, which was formerly an army storage depot. Although he wonders what just happened, he quickly finds out. An artillery shell from what appears to be the same battery lands right in front of him in his town square, throwing young Loid into the croquette shop behind him. He only survives thanks to his military combat helmet (which he wore no less for fun), in contrast to the bystanders in front of him and the poor croquette vendor. But even as Loid stares in shock at the chaos, his mother makes it to him and flees with him. Certainly not without her father.
Loid’s mother flees with him to another city to stay with her uncle. However, Loid still hasn’t come to terms with the fact that his father is dead and still believes he will come home. He even plans to apologize for lying to get the money to buy a toy gun. However, it’s pretty clear now that he’ll never get that chance. Unfortunately for young Loid, things get a lot worse.
The Little Ones: The Loid Version
The scene inside Spy x family CH 62.2 then cuts to young Loid in his new town fishing for a meal for his mother because rations were low. Unfortunately, Ostania then decides to launch an air raid on the city. The young Loid is swept away by a crowd that pushes him into an air raid shelter in time. Unfortunately, his mother is not so lucky. Although Tatsuya Endo does not act out the scene, the dialogue strongly suggests that young Loid finds his mother’s body amidst the bombed ruins of their home.
The chapter then time-skips to Loid, who is now a young man fighting in a war against Ostania that seems to have dragged on for years. He joins his country’s army because now all he has left is anger at his nation’s invaders. By his own admission, he left “tens of thousands” of bodies behind during his military service. Luckily, however, he gets a light in the distance at the very end of the chapter in the form of a young Franky, whom Loid almost accidentally shoots with his FN FAL. How does this even scruffy Franky Loid help find a light in the darkness? Well, we just have to wait for the next chapter of Spy x family find out.
Spy x family CH 62.2: Analysis
This frank and brutal portrayal of war and its impact on young Loid and those around him is what makes it stand out Spy x family CH 62.2 so great. This portrayal of modern war from a civilian perspective is frighteningly realistic. Like I said, it feels exactly like a scene straight out of it This war of mine, complete with the tragedy and sorrow. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this latest arc is the result of Tatsuya Endo dealing with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and deciding to portray it in manga form.
However, the inclusion of Franky at the end honestly feels like the light at the end of a very dark tunnel for Loid. In this day and age, Franky is a bit of a comic relief figure. One that Loid seems to like quite a bit. It’s nice that we both see how the duo met and how it signals the start of something more light-hearted for Loid. Now we just have to wait for the next chapter of Spy x family by Tatsuya Endo to find out what it is.
