When it comes to real estate, everyone knows it’s location, location, location. So when Daryl Hardy of Hardy Builders, LLC chose his spot for the 2022 Homearama Tour, he chose the 11409 River Beauty Loop.
“I specifically chose a corner lot,” he told The Courier Journal, explaining that the space allowed him to create a striking, unique exterior that set it apart from other homes in The Hamlet, the Oldham County section of Norton Commons , would stand out.
“If you approach (the house) from the future (main) entrance,” Hardy explained, “you see the design and the architecture with the gables and the courtyard and the conservatory with all the glass.” It’s quite attractive and really noticeable.”
Hardy says creating a stunning exterior was just one of his goals with this home.
“I (also) wanted to go back a bit – historically – and have a very large dining room (room) in front with a living area and separate the kitchen,” he said, explaining that it’s common these days to walk through a front door straight into an open plan kitchen and living room area.
The Grand Haven instead opens up into a space called the lounge, which has ample shelving, a small bar area, and plenty of seating. To the right, the lounge connects to a bright conservatory that overlooks the outdoor fireplace and courtyard of the house. To the left, the dining room offers a long table with seating for eight.

“We still had to make it open plan because everyone loves open plan (concept),” Hardy added, “so when we got into the kitchen, (we included) a large fireplace room and informal dining area and all the glass (that leads) out on the porch.”
One feature Hardy emphasizes that tour-goers probably won’t immediately notice is the ash wood porch.
“It’s not an ipe or a composite,” he explained. “It’s real ash wood that has been molecularly altered by heat and steam.”
The lounge, Hardy explains, was designed as a sort of adult relaxation space. A small bar sits in the built-in walnut shelves and there is a table for board or card games. In the center of the room, a plush sofa and side chairs with martini tables provide a comfortable setting for drinks and conversation.
“I think (the room) turned out really cool, very masculine,” said Bailey Pitts of Bailey At Home, who oversaw the entire interior design of the home. “[It has]the cigar/bourbon vibe I wanted.”
Another representative room – which both Hardy and Pitts are particularly fond of – is the butler’s pantry. “I knew I wanted to make a really fun butler’s pantry,” Pitts said, explaining that such a small space allows for bold design decisions.
“The green (high gloss, lacquer) and (bird) wallpaper,” she added, “turned out great. And all those details that I did – like the gallery railings on the floating shelves (and the) cremone studs – made it really cool.”

A single starting point
Pitts describes the entire interior design of the house as a modern interpretation of the traditional style.
“I like to mix warmer colors with lighter colors and throw in some more modern elements, but still keep traditional ones (including those),” she said.
The tones used throughout the house, she explains, were inspired by the wallpaper in the powder room.
“Often it starts with something you find and then the house kind of builds around it,” she explained. “I’ve fallen in love with (this wallpaper), so I (determine) my color scheme for the whole house.”
The wallpaper features burnt coral, navy, green and cream tones – and these colors are scattered throughout the home. Coral window treatments in the dining room, Pitts says, elevated the space; while green and cream seating in the fireplace room gives the area a cozy, comfortable feel.

“There’s (a lot of) heart and soul in it, as any designer knows,” she added. “It’s a… long process, (and) it’s cool to see how (everything) is coming together.”
