SHAYNA: 125 YEARS AGO RUNNERS DARE THEIR WAY FROM HOPKINTON TO BOSTON FOR THEIR BOSTON MARATHON. 75 YEARS AGO JACKIE ROBINSON TAKEN THE FIELD AS THE FIRST AFRICAN TO PLAY MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IN THE MODERN FIELD – AIR OUT. 60 YEARS AGO, JOHN GLENN BECAME THE FIRST AMERICAN TO ACHIEVE EARTH. 45 YEARS AGO WE MET LUKE, LEAH AND HAN. WE KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT ANNIVERSARIES, 50 YEARS OF WCVB WITH LOCAL NEWS AND 40 YEARS CHRONICLES TELLING THE STORIES OF NEW ENGLAND. 2022 IS A YEAR OF CELEBRATION FOR MANY, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS CELEBRATING THEIR MILESTONES. >> THIS IS THE CHRONICLE ON WCVB CHANNEL 5. IT’S PART OF THE BUSINESS. WHEN I WAS A TEENAGE IT WAS LIKE ENTERING THE STORE, AND I DID, AND I’VE BEEN HERE EVER. SHAYNA: DON LOPEZ SAYS THE ART OF FLORAL DESIGN IS IN HIS BLOOD. IN 1922 HIS GRANDFATHER LOPEZ OPENED THE FLORIST IN ROXBURY. >> I NEVER GO TO A DESIGN SCHOOL, MICHAEL NEVER. IT IS IN ME, MY FATHER AND GRANDFATHER. NOW WHEN PEOPLE CALL US TODAY EITHER ME, MY SON OR MICHAEL ANSWER THE PHONE AND WE CAN’T BE DIFFERENT BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE SAME MANNERISMS TO SEE AND DO THINGS TOGETHER. SHAYNA: THE SHOP REMAINED IN ROXBURY FOR 40 YEARS BEFORE THEY MOVED TO DORCHESTER’S ADAMS VILLAGE >>. WE ARE SO BLESSED TO BE HERE. SHAYNA: IN A WORLD OF INSTANT SATISFACTION AND ONLINE ORDERING, MANY MOM AND POP HAVE FALLED OUT OF OUR SHOPS – FLOWER SHOPS HAVE CLOSED. >> WHEN FLOWERS WERE NEEDED THE ONLY PLACE YOU COULD NEED THEM WAS AT A FLOWER SHOP. TODAY THEY HAVE SUPERMARKETS, GAS STATIONS. EVERYONE SELLS FLOWERS. SHAYNA: WHILE THE FAMILY HAS SEEN THE BUSINESS UP AND DOWN, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE LONGEVITY TO YOUR CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE BECOME YOUR SECOND FAMILY. >> 90% OF THE TIME I KNOW WHO IT IS AND WHERE IT GOES SO JUST TWO CLICKS AND I HAVE THE ORDER SO THE RELATIONSHIP IS AWESOME. >> WE ARE BLESSED TO HAVE A STABLE BUSINESS AND WITH FUNERALS, WEDDINGS, BIRTHDAYS, GUYS WHO GET DIFFICULT WITH THEIR WIVES AND I BRING THEM A BEAUTIFUL BIG BOUQUET OF FLOWERS AND BACK TO THE BIG BED. THAT HELPS A LOT. ALL THESE GUYS ALWAYS GET IN trouble at some point. SHAYNA: HE STILL WORKS AT THE STORE BUT HIS TWO SONS RUN THE SHOW NOW. >> I DID NOT WANT TO BE A FLORIST, THIS HAPPENED AND I AM HAPPY TO JOIN THE FAMILY BUSINESS. >> ALL IS BY WATCHING FATHER AND GRANDFATHER AND HEARING THE STORIES. THERE IS NO BETTER EDUCATION THAN BEING THE ONLY STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM FOR 300 YEARS 65 DAYS A YEAR. SHAYNA: IT’S TIME FOR STUDENTS TO BECOME TEACHERS. A BASIS WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? >> START WITH THE GREEN AND I’LL BUILD ROUND AND TALL. THIS IS LEATHER SHEET AND CHOOSE A FEW PIECES. I try to keep excess greenery from touching the water. A LITTLE MORE,. ANOTHER GREEN THAT’S LEMON TIPS. SO I JUST WANT TO ADD A FEW PIECES OF THEM. SHAYNA: Next I’m going to add filler flowers. >> WHEN I DO SOMETHING, I HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT I’M DOING BUT I HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME. SHAYNA: I COPY YOU COMPLETELY. I CHOOSE PINK FOR MY ARRANGEMENT AND THEN IT’S TIME FOR THE FINISHING TOUCH, ROSES. >> WITH THESE ROWS – WITH THE ROSE, I WILL DECREAS THE GUARDIAN TITLES. SHAYNA: YOU JUST MAKE IT LOOK FRESH? THAT WOULD PLEASURE SOMEONE’S DAY. ALTHOUGH THE LOPEZ FAMILY IS LIGHT – THEY ARE DELIGHTED TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS IN BUSINESS, THEY ARE PRIDE OF THE SMALL THINGS. >> I LOVE THE REACTION WHEN WE DO A GOOD JOB, WHICH MORE THAN HAPPENS. I AM VERY PROUD OF THE FAMILY BUSINESS AND THE SUCCESSFUL THING MY FAMILY HAS MADE. >> I CALL IT A BLESSING TO COME IN – TO COME IN HERE.
